Why we build on Tridium Niagara
When a building contains plant from a dozen manufacturers, meters on M-Bus, packaged units on Modbus, room controls on KNX and a requirement to see it all in one place, you need something at the centre that treats variety as normal. For us, that centre is usually the Niagara Framework — and the word framework is doing real work in that sentence.
A framework, not a product
Niagara, developed by Tridium, isn't a range of controllers with a brand on the lid. It's a software platform that runs on hardware from many manufacturers, with drivers for the protocols buildings actually use — BACnet, Modbus, M-Bus, KNX, MQTT and more. Its core trick is normalisation: whatever a value arrives as, it becomes a standard point inside the station, taggable, trendable, alarmable and displayable like any other. The messy diversity of a real estate turns into one coherent model.
Why that matters to a building owner
Three reasons. No hardware lock-in: because Niagara runs across an ecosystem of vendors, the supervisor layer doesn't chain you to one manufacturer's controllers or price list. It scales honestly: the same framework runs a single plantroom on one JACE controller or an estate of sites reporting into a central supervisor, so you're not replatforming as you grow. Your data becomes useful: consistent tagging (including Project Haystack conventions) means trends and meter readings come out structured, ready for dashboards and analytics rather than trapped in screenshots.
The honest caveats
Niagara rewards competence and punishes shortcuts. It should be engineered by certified people who name points properly, tag consistently and document what they build — and you should receive the backups and credentials at handover, as with anything we touch. It's also not automatically the answer: a small building with simple plant may be better served by a leaner setup, and part of being independent is saying so. But when the brief is "many systems, one screen, no lock-in" — which is most modern briefs — an open framework at the centre is hard to argue with, and it's where we've chosen to be expert.
